Police Reserves
The Spearfish Police Reserve Officer Program seeks qualified citizens who meet the difficult standards necessary to become a Spearfish Police Reserve Officer. The City of Spearfish and the Spearfish Police Department invite you to consider a second career with one of South Dakota's finest law enforcement agencies. Reserve Officers perform the same functions, under the guidance, of full-time sworn officers. They are fully uniformed police officers who work in patrol vehicles along with full time officers. |

Spearfish Reserve Officers are utilized to supplement law enforcement manpower. Like regular officers, Reserve Officers are professionally trained and duly sworn law enforcement personnel. In most cases, reserves are assigned to the same duties as regular officers. Routine tasks such as patrol, booking, surveillance, and traffic control are just some examples of reserve duties. Reserves also are assigned to work for special events with Black Hills State University and Spearfish High School, and other events coordinated by the City. |
Spearfish Reserve Officers are volunteers that may work as little as 8 hours per month and are not usually compensated for their normal duty time. The Reserve Unit is comprised of individuals that want to contribute to the safety and well-being of their community as well as those who desire to work in law enforcement prior to seeking full-time law enforcement careers.
The application process consists of a resume review, initial interview, thorough background check, recommendation to the Chief of Police, and Chief's interview. The process is long and can take from 4 - 6 months.
Once the applicants are hired as recruits, they attend a basic training program that lasts approximately 15 weeks. Classes are held two nights a week with some Saturday sessions.

The Spearfish Police Reserves are not currently accepting applications.
